Michelle Jackson-Blackwell

Content Designer. Certified UX Writer. Certified Usability Analyst. Interaction Designer.

I design with words.
I simplify the complex.
I love what I do.

Two Words: Creative, Analytical

As a Certified UX Writer and CUA, with 7+ years experience in content design and 10+ years experience in interaction design & UX strategy, I help digital product teams simplify, clarify, and improve the UI, UX, & interactions between the product & the user on global platforms. I bring a passion for UX, effective communication, & craft building to every team I join.

I'm a craft-oriented, insights-driven content designer with a career in UX and a lifelong love for words. I participate fully in the design thinking process -- helping to simplify complex concepts and deliver [functional + emotional] content and experiences that meet user needs AND business goals. I enjoy partnering with product teams & collaborating with cross-functional teams to iterate on design solutions and solve business challenges.

My career is built on a foundation of professional experience, graduate education, professional certifications, and a deep respect for user-centered design. I'm just as likely to ask questions to get to the root of the pain point as I am to write UI content or microcopy, perform task analysis, participate in design thinking sessions, sketch a design idea, build a wireframe, or prep a prototype for user testing.

"...Smart people respect simple language not because simple words are easy, but because expressing interesting ideas in small words takes a lot of work..."

-- The Atlantic (Why Simple Is Smart)

What I Do

UX Writing & Content Design

As a Certified UX Writer, I use language & user-centered design to simplify the UI & user experience, help users complete tasks, shape digital product experiences for the target audience, and support companies in achieving business goals globally.

I design, write, edit, & test UI product content & microcopy for mobile, desktop, & enterprise products/systems -- applying UX writing fundamentals, audience analysis, content design, information architecture, UX research, data insights, brand voice, tone, & style guidelines to optimize and improve the end-to-end customer journey & related touch points.

I partner with product and design teams to analyze UI flows, customer pain points, user needs, business goals, personas, tasks, UX strategy, content strategy, generative AI, UX research, & data insights -- to craft contextually clear, concise, conversational, consistent, cohesive, & brand-specific UI content and usable interaction design.

I work with globalization teams on localization strategy, incorporating the impact of world languages, global customs, & the impact of the translation of content on comprehension, text expansion, and even the transcreation of UI content when needed.

Interaction Design & UX Strategy

I speak the language of user-centered design with product teams and business stakeholders. I partner with diverse cross-functional teams for collaboration on product design, content design, interaction design, UX strategy, & product strategy, as we improve the customer experience and iterate on complex design solutions with data-driven results.

I respect the alliance of user needs & business goals. I communicate with product managers, product designers, UX researchers, subject matter experts, engineers/devs, data scientists, localization, marketing copywriters, brand marketing, legal counsel, executives and other stakeholders.

I value UX research, insights from user testing, & data analytics to validate design solutions, understand the target audience, and improve the quality of the messaging, interactions, and user experience -- incorporating feedback from personas, journey maps, UX research, usability testing, & content testing.

"...Writing UX text is iterative, starting with less-than-perfect words, then replacing those words with slightly better words, and repeating until you find the best words..."

-- Strategic Writing for UX

Why I Like What I Do

I'm both creative & analytical

Always have been, and this is why I am genuinely energized by UX & design thinking. I consider myself fortunate to have built a career in a profession I enjoy. Making the digital product experience 'look & feel' easy is actually not easy at all, and I enjoy the user-centered design process.

My career lives at the intersection (or traffic circle) of content design, UX writing, interaction design, & UX strategy. My years of experience in UX architecture, plus a lifelong love for words and natural affinity for writing and editing, led me on an interesting "happy path" to content design. To learn more, take a look at my story on Medium.

I'm all about collaboration

I believe product design, content design, and UX research must work collaboratively with product management teams to create usable and engaging digital experiences that meet business goals AND user needs.

I communicate across organizational levels -- from users to executives -- with a proven track record of successfully completing projects individually, collaboratively, and with remote and global teams. As recommended by the Harvard Business Review, I enjoy working collaboratively with diverse perspectives for creative problem solving of complex design challenges.

Goals & Things

I'm an author, or my alter ego is... my intuition tells me I'm overdue for writing a book. I've been a reader, writer, and instinctive editor since I was a child. I still remember my grade school literature teacher keeping me after class to say she moved me to Advanced Placement (AP) Literature after turning in a poetry assignment!

I love HTML. It's actually kind of relaxing. I built, hand-code, & update the super simple website you're looking at now. Sure I could use a templated platform, but coding HTML reminds me what's behind the UI curtain and provides important context for working with front-end and back-end developers and engineers.

Fun fact about me. I find the human brain fascinating! I believe the human brain is the final frontier. There's still so much we don't know and need to understand about how the brain works. On the path not taken, I might have studied neuroscience had I not been so intrigued by UX architecture.
